Global daily sea surface temperatures reached their highest level ever recorded for the month of June in 2026, raising fresh concerns among climate scientists over the increasing risk of widespread marine heatwaves. While experts caution that it is too early to determine whether the trend will persist, the latest data underline the accelerating impact of climate change on the world’s oceans.

The world’s oceans have once again entered uncharted territory after global daily sea surface temperatures reached a record high during June 2026, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS). Scientists say the development could have significant implications for marine ecosystems, global weather patterns and coastal economies.

According to Copernicus, the average global sea surface temperature during June 2026 reached 20.98°C, surpassing the previous June records set in both 2023 and 2024. On 21 June, the global daily average briefly climbed to approximately 21.0°C, the highest value ever observed for that time of year in records dating back to 1979.

Scientists stress that the oceans are central to regulating the Earth’s climate. They absorb around 90 per cent of the excess heat generated by greenhouse gas emissions and approximately one-quarter of human-produced carbon dioxide, helping to moderate atmospheric warming. However, the continued accumulation of heat is placing increasing strain on marine ecosystems worldwide.

Marine Heatwaves Becoming More Frequent

Exceptionally warm sea surface temperatures increase the likelihood of marine heatwaves—prolonged periods of unusually warm ocean water that can last for weeks or even months. These events have become more frequent and intense over recent decades, causing widespread coral bleaching, fish mortality, harmful algal blooms and disruption to marine food chains.

Marine heatwaves also affect commercial fisheries, aquaculture and tourism, while warmer oceans provide additional energy for tropical cyclones and can contribute to heavier rainfall, flooding and other extreme weather events.

Climate Change and Natural Variability

Scientists believe the latest record reflects a combination of long-term human-induced climate change and natural climate variability. Although an emerging El Niño pattern may contribute to further warming in the coming months, researchers caution that it remains uncertain how strong the event will become or how long elevated sea temperatures will persist.

Annual sea surface temperatures typically continue rising through July and August, meaning additional records cannot be ruled out if current conditions continue. Nevertheless, climate experts emphasise that more observations are needed before determining whether June’s record represents a temporary anomaly or the beginning of another prolonged period of exceptional ocean warming.

Wider Climate Implications

The latest figures reinforce growing concern that the world’s oceans are approaching unprecedented levels of accumulated heat. Scientists warn that warmer oceans contribute to rising sea levels through thermal expansion, accelerate the melting of polar ice, reduce the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon and threaten biodiversity across marine ecosystems.

The record also comes as many parts of Europe, North America and Asia experience unusually intense summer heat, highlighting the interconnected nature of the Earth’s climate system.
