Now a ‘humanitarian gesture” by Trump

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will help free commercial vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the effort as a “humanitarian gesture” aimed at easing one of the most dangerous flashpoints in the Iran conflict. Several ships have been trapped or delayed in and around the narrow waterway, which carries a significant share of global oil and gas exports and has seen repeated attacks and threats since hostilities escalated earlier this year.

Under the plan, US naval assets, likely joined by selected allies, would escort ships deemed to be at particular risk of harassment or attack as they transit the chokepoint between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The White House is presenting the move as limited and defensive, but Iran has already warned that such an operation could violate existing ceasefire understandings. Tehran argues that increased foreign military presence in the Strait only heightens the risk of miscalculation and undermines regional sovereignty.

The operation, widely reported as part of a broader initiative dubbed “Project Freedom,” comes as oil markets remain jittery despite earlier announcements intended to calm traders. Brent crude prices have been relatively unmoved, suggesting that investors remain unconvinced that a narrow escort mission will be enough to stabilise a volatile security environment. Diplomats in Europe and the Gulf are watching closely to see whether the move leads to renewed talks or a new round of maritime confrontations. For now, the fate of the stranded ships has become a symbol of the wider struggle over freedom of navigation, sanctions, and influence in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
